Farmers Are Doing Their Part For The Bay!
(Editorial Sent to Star Democrat)

For those of us in this county who are involved in agriculture, it was very disappointing to see some of the Talbot County Councilmen state that “we are not doing our part” in cleaning up the water in our watershed.  It’s apparent that our efforts in showing the facts and statistics of how aggressive our farmers have implemented various BMP’s (Best Management Practices) over the last several decades have fallen on deaf ears in exchange for local environmental agendas.  Agriculture, especially in this state, has likely done more to reduce our environmental footprint than many other elements of our society.  As science and technology advances in this area, farmers have implemented and will continue to adopt practices that demonstrate a cost/benefit for our industry.  Computer models should be used to stimulate research, not regulations.  Our current WIP II model is admittedly flawed and not using current data according to the Maryland Department of Environment, yet some in Talbot County government are willing to jeopardize our struggling economy with more regulations using this data. The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), not local jurisdictions, has the proper authority and expertise to regulate our states largest resource based industry and administrate the application of future BMP’s.  We encourage everyone interested in the future of agriculture in this county to contact the council and stay involved.
